Schoology Study: Time is the Number One Obstacle to Effective Digital Learning
Global study of 2,846 education professionals sheds light on state of digital learning in K-12 education today.
NEW YORK—Sep. 15, 2017—According to new research published by Schoology, a leading learning management system (LMS) for education, the three biggest obstacles to successfully utilizing technology for teaching and learning are lack of time, infrastructure, and professional development resources. The inaugural study surveyed 2,846 education professionals of all roles and backgrounds to gather concrete insights about the current state of digital learning in K-12 classrooms and shed light on challenges and priorities. A significant number of survey respondents came from K-12 institutions in the U.S., while the remainder spanned 88 other countries around the world.
An overwhelming majority of respondents say digital learning positively impacts both student achievement (95%) and teaching effectiveness (92%). Despite the enthusiasm and confidence in digital learning’s results, more than 43% of respondents noted that lack of time was the biggest obstacle to integrating technology and more than 40% noted a lack of devices. In a separate question, student access to technology was also listed as the top challenge for digital learning by nearly 40% of faculty.

Blended Learning is Perceived as the Most Effective Instructional Approach
- There’s an obvious recognition of the need to tailor learning to students—75% of respondents noted that they use a differentiated learning approach. When asked to select the most effective instructional approach, however, the most popular choice among educators was blended learning.
Learning Management Systems Have a Positive Impact on Student Engagement
- Of respondents who noted that students at their institution are “very engaged,” 89% said an LMS is in use most days, if not every day, of the week. This indicates that successful LMS use leads to the highest rates of student engagement. As we know, better student engagement means increased student achievement.
Notably, top priorities and challenges remained the same regardless of school size, indicating that regardless of technology teachers are using or the learning objectives they are tasked with achieving, time-saving solutions can make a significant impact on both teacher satisfaction and student outcomes.
