You'll Love the Sharp New Feel of Schoology's iOS Mobile App
Have you ever tuned your skis or snowboard? For those of you who haven't, tuning is the process of cleaning, sharpening, and aligning your ski edges. A good tune provides control, precision, and stability while your speeding down a mountain or preparing to fly through the air. Believe it or not, tuning works in much the same way with technology.
Take our iOS mobile app for example. We've fine tuned it to increase its performance and give you and your students a better, more stable mobile learning experience.
Introducing Schoology's iOS mobile app v2.9—a smoother, more effective version of its former self. By sharpening the interface and layout of four features and completely rebuilding another, we have made our iOS mobile app more powerful than ever.
Brand New Media Albums
Schoology media albums are a fantastic way to engage students with stunning imagery and encourage their creativity through any digital media available on their mobile devices. We decided to rebuild our mobile media albums from scratch to improve both the creative and interactive aspects of this feature.
Image and Video Captions
Our mobile media albums now support image and video captions! This enables you to make each piece of media its own mini mobile lesson. Though captions can only be added and edited on the web platform via a browser, the ability to view them in the app will improve your students' mobile learning experiences in big ways.
Improved Viewing Experience
Our new media albums have numerous improvements including the thumbnail layout, the video playback, and the ability to refresh the screen. One notable new feature is the thumbnail browser. Previously, when you were viewing media in full screen mode, you're only option was to swipe from one picture to the next (as shown below), which you can still do:
But what if you wanted to, say, jump to the last image in the album? This is where the new thumbnail browser comes in. This sweet little feature enables you to quickly switch from one image to another in full screen mode without swiping through them in consecutive order. Just tap the gallery icon in the top right corner and choose your picture!
Improved Recent Activity and Updates Feeds
We've also fine tuned our Recent Activity and Updates feeds. You'll notice a cleaner layout and a new side-scrolling feature that enables you to peruse the image thumbnails attached to each post in a much more effective way than before.
This thumbnail layout helps you view media more quickly and reduces the space of each post so you can see comments, leave a comment, and even view other posts without scrolling.
Schoology folders can be life savers when trying to organize a whole year's worth of content into a coherent flow. Folder descriptions are a big part of that. If you don't write descriptions for your folders (or use folders at all!), it is a great way to streamline the navigation of your course.
If you do write descriptions for your folders, you will be ecstatic to know that our iOS mobile app now supports them! And for those of you who write long and detailed folder titles, we improved how they show up in the app as well.
Rebuilt Pages Panel
In order to provide a better user experience with pages, we have completely rebuilt the pages panel. Now text and media will hold their formatting better so each page displays the way its author had intended. We have also moved the attachments from the bottom to the top of the page for easy access.
Improved Rich Text Descriptions
Now when you and your students view the rich text descriptions on assignments, discussions, and other materials, you'll notice a few changes. We have improved the layout so all the media and beautifully formatted text is adjusted to fit your device screen in both landscape and portrait mode. The zooming and scrolling capabilities have also been improved.
There's no doubt that our iOS app version 2.9 is more streamlined and stable than ever before. But you don't have to take my word for it. Download it today and see for yourself. Once you do, feel free to let us know what you think by commenting below or in the Twittersphere (@Schoology).
