[Video] Elevating Blended Learning Beyond Technology with Katie Martin

Posted in Community | November 10, 2017

What's the difference between a technology rich and a blended environment? How can you get teachers thinking deeper about their vision for their classrooms? How should you approach the shift from traditional to digital learning? These are just a few of the questions being grappled with in this episode of The Dr. Will Show featuring Dr. Katie Martin, now the Director of District Leadership at Buck Institute for Education.

"If we're not discussing pedagogy and we're not discussing beliefs about teaching and learning and how students really engage with content to learn in authentic ways," explains Katie in the video, "the technology is a substitute ... that in an of itself is not going to change the way kids learn."

Katie makes a great point. Technology is all too often seen as the end and not as a means to an end. As Robert Schuetz puts it in this blog, technology can be a "false summit." He was so focused on reaching a 1:1 ratio of students to devices that little planning went into what happens afterwards.

How are your devices (or other tools) going to be used? What does learning look like when these tools are integrated thoughtfully into curricula, projects, assessments, and management workflows? If we can learn anything from Robert's experience, it's that these deeper, pedagogical questions will have to be answered, at one time or another. And answering these questions early on in the scoping and planning phases of a tech initiative is key.

"I don't care about the technology," explains Katie. "I want to see what kids are learning."
