5 New Bigger-Than-Life Features That'll Make You Say YES!

Posted in Schoology | February 02, 2015

Elephants are big, but our newest features are bigger.

I often like to highlight the importance of small yet transformative features we've been working on, because they can have huge impacts on the learning experience. But I have to say that I absolutely love sharing the big features with you, and these five are colossal!

Let's just dive in, shall we?

BigBlueButton Video Conferencing *Enterprise Only

We're excited to announce one of our most anticipated app integrations: BigBlueButton! With this free app, you now have the ability to hold video conferences with up to 50 people.

People love Schoology, in part, because it makes collaboration easier. Now, with the addition of this app, we're taking collaboration to a whole new level. With BigBlueButton, you can easily:

  • Create, plan, and hold audio/video conferences with members of a course or a group
  • Moderate the live discussion through muting capabilities
  • Chat instantly with all attendees or individuals
  • Hold live video presentations and even let students present
  • Upload documents and even make live annotations
  • Teach using an interactive whiteboard
  • Record video conferences and allow students to view them

Check out this video tutorial to learn more about this awesome integration:

Okay, Okay. How Do I Get BigBlueButton?

If you subscribe to Schoology Enterprise, then you can get the BigBlueButton app in our App Center. Just install the app and get started video conferencing in your courses and groups. It's really easy.

And if you have any questions, BigBlueButton has some very helpful tutorials, like the one above, on their website.

Two New and Powerful Resource Apps

We've taken another step towards our goal of giving you unbridled and seamless access to all the content you could possibly want. This time, we've launched two new resources apps and given you the ability to embed resource app content right into your course materials and resources (i.e., assignments, pages, discussions, and tests/quizzes)!

Here's how to install them:

  1. Select the Resources menu.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Click Install Apps.
  4. Choose the app you want and install it.

YouTube App

You can now access and import YouTube videos from within your Resources and even embed them right into your course materials without ever leaving Schoology! To start, simply install the YouTube App.

Once the app is installed, you can quickly add videos in Resources or course materials like in the assignment below:

If your students love to learn from videos, this app is going to streamline how you use them in a big wayгimproving engagement and saving clicks while you do it!

Vimeo App

Just like with our YouTube app, you can now access and import Vimeo videos from within Schoology! To start, simply install the Vimeo App.

Below, you'll see how you can access Vimeo from your Resources area:

Adding videos to your courses and resource collections is a cinch. This will no doubt simplify how you use videos throughout the platform.

Embed Resource App Content in Any Rich Text

YouTube and Vimeo aren't the only content providers that you can embed using the Rich Text Editor. We've also expanded this functionality to include other integrated third-party sources in your lessons and resources in a more seamless, efficient way.

These third-party vendors include:

  • YouTube
  • Vimeo
  • Google Drive
  • Dropbox
  • Evernote
  • Khan Academy

Microsoft Office 365 Single Sign-On (SSO) *Enterprise Only

As educators and administrators, you have enough to worry about without having to help students log into your online tools. As you probably know already, this process can be like herding cats with one platform, not to mention two or three.

But if your institution subscribes to Microsoft Office 365's enterprise accounts, then those days are over!

With SSO, you and your students can now log into your Microsoft Office accounts and be automatically logged into Schoology, or vice versa. Save time, effort, and start the learning process faster!

To start setting up Office 365 SSO or a similar integration (e.g., Remote Authentication, Direct LDAP, etc.), contact your account manager.
