12 Questions Answered about PowerSchool’s Acquisition of Schoology

Posted in Community | December 13, 2019

You’ve probably heard by now, Schoology has been acquired by PowerSchool. We believe all users—Schoology users, PowerSchool users, and those using both solutions—will benefit immensely from this acquisition in the near term and well into the future.

To kick things off, last week we broadcasted a webinar. In case you missed it, here’s what it covered:

  • How adding Schoology Learning to PowerSchool’s award-winning Unified Classroom™ supports all educators by empowering them with unmatched personalized learning capabilities
  • Customers sharing the benefits of both solutions and how they use them to drive student success
  • A roadmap overview of the future vision of the solutions, plus a glimpse into further investments we will be making
  • How we will continue to support open standards-based and out-of-the-box integrations with all SIS platforms and third-party applications as well as give access to more PowerSchool tools

Q&A: What the Acquisition Means for You and Your District

Because we didn’t have enough time to answer all of the questions at the end of the webinar, we thought we’d do so here on the blog. Answered below are the most common questions we received.

Q: Long term, how is the acquisition of Schoology expected to fit in with Unified Classroom? Will the products remain separate? Will one absorb the other? How is Learning (formerly Haiku) effected?

A: PowerSchool is committed to investing in development and innovation across all our products. In this case, we plan to integrate and combine the best features and benefits of the PowerSchool Unified Classroom™ solution, including PowerSchool Learning, with Schoology’s LMS, providing a best-in-class solution for customers. When you are ready to do so, customers will be provided a no-cost upgrade path to the combined solution.

Additional webinars will dive into roadmap plans—targeted for January 2020.

Q: How will this acquisition impact users that don't have PowerSchool as their SIS platform?

A: There will be no impact on users that don’t have PowerSchool as their SIS, as your day-to-day operations will continue as usual. We’re committed to continuing Schoology’s open standards-based and out-of-the-box integrations with all student information systems (SIS)—including Infinite Campus, Aeries, and Skyward as well as other third-party applications including Google, Microsoft, and other education tools.

Q: How will this acquisition affect PowerSchool users who don’t have Schoology as their LMS?

A: There is no impact to users who have another LMS. PowerSchool’s goal over the last several years has been to provide best-in-class solutions, and to ensure that these solutions are interoperable with each other. With this acquisition, users will have the option to purchase Schoology’s best-in-class LMS and the industry’s most comprehensive classroom solution—with best-in-class learning, assessment, gradebook, special programs, and teacher professional learning.

Q: Will you continue to maintain and improve integrations with other SIS's?

A: Yes. We are committed to supporting out-of-the-box integrations with all SIS platforms.

Q: What is the timeline of this acquisition and the rollout of the Unified system?

A: The acquisition is complete. The planning of the roadmap of enhanced integrated solutions is already underway and will be communicated in the coming months.

Besides regular communications that will be made available for each of the upcoming releases, we will also host additional webinars in January 2020 that will dive more deeply into the integration plans.

Q: What is the 2, 5 and 10-year plan for Schoology AMP? Will PowerSchool continue to improve AMP or will AMP users be forced to move to Performance Matters Assessment?

A: PowerSchool is dedicated to developing a unified assessment product. Customers can continue to use AMP and will have a no-cost upgrade path in the future with the benefits of both products. AMP will be unified with Performance Matters and integrated in a similar fashion with Schoology LMS. In a future upgrade, you will get the benefit of both products.

Q: How will pricing change for PowerSchool or Schoology?

A: Please contact your PowerSchool account representative or Schoology account representative for additional information.

Q: Will I still be able to go through my established channels for support/customer service?

A: Yes. Support contact methods are not changing at all. PowerSchool and Schoology customers will have a seamless support collaboration. With the acquisition, there has been minimal impact to any of your contacts, including Project Managers, Client Success Mangers, and onboarding specialists. Finally, LTI features will still function as they do today.

Q: What is on the roadmap for PowerSchool and Schoology? Will the integration between the gradebooks become more seamless in the future? When will we start to see changes?

A: PowerSchool is committed to investing in development and innovation across all our products. You will start to see a more seamless integration moving forward, and we have multiple product webinars planned in the coming months, at which time more details of this integration (as well as additional plans for roadmap) will be shared.

Q: We are a current Schoology user, but purchasing PowerSchool SIS is out of our budget. Can we continue to use Schoology?

A: Absolutely. Districts will be able to continue using Schoology regardless of their SIS (and PowerSchool SIS users will not be required to move to being hosted). However, with that said, we do encourage you to have a conversation with your account representative about potential benefits (including budget saving opportunities) that may be available if and when there is the need to use additional solutions that PowerSchool offers (such as the Student Information System, online enrollment, special program management, professional learning for staff, etc.).

Q: Where does internationalization rank in your priorities overall?

A: We are excited to continue internationalizing our solutions to ensure that our tools are accessible throughout the world regardless of language preference.

Q: Where can we try Schoology out?

A: Create a free account here. Get a full demonstration of Schoology Enterprise here
